In order to gain an understanding of the validity of the topic being explored and the idea of environment being beneficial to a persons well-being
Sheila has over 25 years of experience working with physically and mentally disabled children and adults. In order to be informed about the validity in visuals being explored in more depth within a functional medically considered environment. The environment in which she works in although is a medical facility it has an informal feel, there are a very small amount of residents which reside in this environment in order for patients and staff to feel more comfortable.
Q: How would you describe the environment which you work in?
A: I would describe it as more like a home, it’s really important that things are like this for patients in order for them to be comfortable. Individuals have come from their family homes to be looked after here, so bringing a sense of normality to patients everyday life is vital for their well-being.
Q: Do you think visuals play an important role in the well-being of your patients?
A: Visual stimulation is good but we don’t use it all the time. We go to a place in Preston sometimes which is a multi-sensory environment with different lighting and visuals for patients to experience. I’d say that lighting was important and for colours try and not use colours that are dull and create a sense of relaxation in how they are chosen.
Q: Have you found that environment is important to patients happiness? As well with the children who you have worked with?
A: Yes, an environment is very important anywhere I’ve worked that’s always been important. I’ve found that an environment can affect so many things towards a patients well-being and especially if people have challenging behaviour. I think music is also important and it can help people feel calmer and relaxed. Being somewhere too noisy can affect people a lot as well.
Q: Have you seen any examples of the environment being effective first hand? Like the ways, you have used colour or decoration within your workplace?
A: It’s difficult to tell really because the only way you could do that is I suppose to totally transform somewhere and see and measure what the effects would be from this?
