"Scissors and glue: Punk Fanzines and the Creation of a DIY Aesthetic "
“What is a fanzine?” Academic author
Teal Triggs addresses this in his book “fanzines – the DIY revolution and ”looks
at the creation and significance as well as his academic essay "Scissors
and glue: Punk Fanzines and the Creation of a DIY Aesthetic “ in which he outlines the overall history of the fanzine.
Triggs acknowledges the 1930s with
the rise of the fanzine and the significant role in the creation of it being a
new creative network for underground culture in spreading information on a
range of different topics from politics all the way to football. When
questioning the relevance of subculture within a modern context Triggs also
goes on to state that the fanzine still remains in the subculture of punk
music, which when 70's Britain was a time of significant cultural, social
and political change. The reaction to this there was a surge of fanzines that
came into creation within the punk culture and a reaction to the 'modern world'
which was changing, as well as the 80’s which also saw a noticeable flourishing
of political protest of zines being created in context of street style and the
rave scene.
Triggs examines at the different impacts of other mediums created influenced for,the fanzine specifically offered as a platform for expression and the idea of a "free space" for "developing ideas and practises and a visual space unencumbered by format design rules and expectations" and that the punk subculture is dead and from the impact of consumerism. Clark discusses the death and life of punk Stating that punk has to die so that it can live" which in turn doesn't completely Clark acknowledges the history of punk as a subculture and the capability that it had in driving forward social change and the impact of its popularity.
The image of rebellion
and the idea of the stereotypical 'bad boy' has reshaped towards the typical
consumer in todays society. The punk subculture has become the victim of being
"caged" and torn away from the "societal jungle and placed in
the “subculture zoo" from this Dylan suggests that Punk has been in a
larger sense “stolen” and in summary that punk is dead.
Regarding both of these
writings within their indivual tone of voice there is a definite contrast in
them illustrating the different aspects of the punk movement, both acknowledge
the impact and relevane of zine’s format, such as Clark expressing and acknowleding
the history of the punk subculture and what it was able to present while also
being critical
While Triggs takes a
similar approach in documenting work in a chronological order as Clark, Triggs
acknowledges the important aspects in their visuals and motivations regarding attitudes,
such as political climate and the impact there is in understanding his critical
nature that he gives the name ‘punk’ and the relevance. Like Triggs suggests
there is a mortality with punk in giving a life outside of its preferred context
specifically within in a modern consumerist climate in which punk can then be
taken as. Its in this we learn the importance of context and the idea of appropriating
different subculture.
